
Susan Medica
Clinical and Counselling Psychologist
With over 25 years of clinical experience, Susan brings a caring, down-to-earth and integrated approach to psychological therapy. She believes that well-being comes from paying attention to the biological, psychological, social and spiritual aspects of our lives. Her aims are to help clients to understand themselves better, release the impacts of adverse life experiences, develop a more compassionate approach to themselves, use tools to regulate emotions, and ultimately enjoy a more empowered life.
Susan draws from training in a range of therapeutic approaches including but not limited to: Psychodynamic Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT); Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Relaxation and Mindfulness practices; Schema Therapy (including Imagery Rescripting), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). Susan holds a Bachelor of Psychology degree (UWA) and a Master of Psychology degree with Distinction (Curtin).
Before joining Akana, Susan worked in Psychology roles for various organizations including, Pax Centre, Road Trauma Support WA, Curtin University Counselling & Disability Services, Department of Communities, King Edward Memorial Hospital and Commonwealth Rehabilitation Service (CRS).
In addition to counselling, Susan has consulted with organizations in the areas of stress management, trauma awareness and vicarious trauma prevention. Susan has developed and facilitated workshops on these topics for first responder/emergency personnel, road incident management crews and university campus staff. She also provides one-one support and coaching for staff working in roles where exposure to trauma is common.
Susan currently assists adults (18+) experiencing issues related to:
• Recent and past trauma (including PTSD & CPTSD)
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Grief and loss
• Ante and post-natal anxiety/depression
• Relationships
• Workplace stress (incl worker’s compensation)
• Stress, burnout and health-related challenges
Susan provides counselling services at Akana by appointment on Mondays and Wednesdays.
