What is integrative medicine?
Integrative medicine incorporates the best of evidence-based integrative medical care alongside evidence-based complementary therapies to support a person’s journey to health and wellness.
Integrative medicine has a major interest in the underlying cause of disease, makes the patient an active participant in their healing and focuses on making the patient as healthy as possible.
What is the difference between an integrative GP and a holistic GP?
At Akana, we are home to both integrative GPs and holistic GPs.
An Integrative GP is a GP who has done further training through ACNEM – The Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine – and is able to provide more complex functional medical testing. For example, this may include looking into environmental toxic exposures and the gut microbiome, which are not routinely provided by our holistic GPs. They are also more familiar with the use of compounded medications, as clinically indicated. A Holistic GP is a GP that provides comprehensive care looking at aspects including lifestyle, medicine and preventative health, as well as dealing with the patient’s most pressing concerns. Their first-line approach is a non-pharmaceutical path, however holistic GPs use pharmaceuticals as indicated if that approach is also required. Akana’s holistic GPs are excited to be working with our wonderful, allied health and complementary health practitioners, who are not often involved in usual doctor/practitioner relationships.

What does Akana mean?
Akana is a mythological Turkic sea goddess, also sometimes known as ‘the white mother’, believed to live in the Mediterranean Sea. With the land and life as we know created at her suggestion, she is known for her strength, divinity, wisdom, potency, and positive action.
Akana is a collaborative clinic. Does this mean my practitioner will share my information with other practitioners in the clinic?
Your private clinical information will only be shared with the other practitioners in the clinic if you give your consent. Your practitioner may ask you if you want some of your clinical information shared to harness the breadth and depth of the Akana team’s experience, but this will be entirely up to you.
Why does Akana have longer consultations?
Longer consultations enable our team to:
- thoroughly understand your history
- undertake any necessary examinations
- develop a holistic treatment plan that is aligned with your goals & which is also practical and easy to apply to daily life
Much more can be achieved with an hour-long appointment than four shorter ones.
What rebates will I be able to claim?
Our GPs are all RACGP qualified, meaning you will receive a Medicare rebate dependent on the time spent in the consult. Many of our other practitioners are eligible to claim private health rebates, however, unfortunately, some are not eligible. Please ask our reception staff for more details.
